Troop 81 -- Posted by mark on Tuesday, September 19 2006

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Trails West Council, Cahokia Mounds District

Traditional Boy Scouting. A commitment to God, Country, and Family.

Troop 81, Maryville, Illinois, cordially invites you to attend one of our meetings.

Our Troop is a “living history” unit dedicated to Scouting, and currently includes several home schooled Scouts.

Our Scouts are encouraged and guided through the scouting ranks to Eagle, if they so desire, learning all skills necessary to achieve their scouting goals. We utilize all scouting methods plus the historical knowledge and skills of the original scouts, “THE MOUNTAIN MEN,” to enhance the scouting experience.

Our troop is dedicated to the authentic reproduction, re-enactment and history of Robert Roger's Rangers, circa 1756. Also known as the Green Mountain Men, they gained fame and respect during the Colonial French and Indian wars.

Our troop camps in colonial style canvas wedge tents. Each member of our unit makes his own Ranger uniform (worn at all rendezvous and period events.) Our normal camping and training uniform is hunting camouflage. We wear our BSA class A uniforms at all other functions.

Each Scout will gain the skills to make and use:

Ghost shirts-legging-moccasins- throwing hawks-knives-bows-arrows-black powder rifles-tents-cooking lays-camp furniture and flint knapping.

Scouting encourages pride and self-reliance.

BEST OF ALL BEING PART OF THIS TROOP IS JUST FUN!!!

We know our troop is not for everyone because it entails hard work, study, getting dirty, achieving things others only dream of, and a desire to be part of our American heritage. But don’t sell yourself short; it’s the American sense of adventure which makes this country great. Scouting can provide that opportunity. All training and use of equipment is with the permission of the parent. Scout rules, safety standards, and compliance with applicable safety regulations are adhered to.

If you are interested, please contact: Mr. William L. Barton, Jr., Scoutmaster, Troop 81, Maryville    618-288-6049 or via e-mail at theWBarton@yahoo.com.
